Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and Deputy Mayor Darryl Smith, along with several other City representatives,  joined residents and representatives of local organizations in a walk through the present and emerging future of the Rainier Beach neighborhood.

The walk began at the Atlantic City Nursery, the proposed site for an innovative Urban Farm and Wetlands project sponsored by the Friends of Atlantic City Nursery, followed by a tour of the Lake Washington Apartments and lunch at the Saars Market Taco stand. After strolling through the business district, the group assembled at the Rainier Beach Community Center to hear presentations from the Rainier Beach Community Empowerment  Coalition; Housing Group Resource and Urban Impact; the Rainier Chamber of Commerce; a University of Washington Community, Environment and Planning class; and the Rainier Beach Learning Garden. The tour ended with a visit to South Shore Court.

Thanks to all who made the event such a success, including Yun Pitre (Southeast Neighborhood District Coordinator), Jennifer Duong (SE Program Coordinator, Seattle Neighborhood Group), Peter Masundire and the enthusiastic Friends of Atlantic City Nursery (FACN), Barb Biondo (Lake Washington Apartments), Greg Anderson (Rainier Beach Merchants Association), Jerri Plumridge (SEEDArts), Gregory Davis (Rainier Beach  Community Empowerment Coalition), Becky Bicknell (Housing Group Resource), Susan Davis (Rainier Chamber of  Commerce), Marty Curry and students (University of Washington Community, Environment, Planning class), Sharon Lerman (Rainier Beach Learning Garden), and Shurvon Wright (South Shore Court).

And we look forward to the Mayor joining us once again at the Back2School Bash in August!

NOTE: If anyone captured photos of the visits to Lake Washington Apartments or South Shore Court, please email them to rainierbeachneighborhood@hotmail.com and we’ll add them into the slideshow presentation.
