During the next few weeks, the Food Justice Fellow will be seeking community input on their campaign to reduce food waste in the Rainier Beach area.

Food waste is a bigger problem than meets the eye. The trends are disturbing, and all of us are contributing. Here are some important facts about food waste from the Seattle Public Utilities Love Food Stop Waste Fact Sheet:

  • 40% of food in the United States goes uneaten
  • We throw away $160 billion worth of food a year in the U.S. By reducing food waste, a family of four could save as much as $1500 a Year!
  • If all the wasted food in the world was grown on one farm, that farm would be larger than Canada.

Meanwhile, 1 in 8 households in the U.S. don’t have enough to eat. The problem may seem big, but the solution can be simple.

The Food Justice Fellows meet every Friday to attempt to conquer the issue of food waste in Rainier Beach. We are becoming more informed about the consequences of food waste, and with that knowledge, we’re becoming prepared to waste less food in our own lives. We’re fun having coming up with creative video ideas to showcase our food waste reduction journeys.

While the Food Justice Fellows are on their own journey, we encourage you to think about what you can do to reduce your own food waste. Check out the posted links for tips.
