United Nations’ Universal Declaration Human Rights Day, December 10,2013

The Seattle Human Rights Award will be presented at the Seattle Human Rights Day/Seattle Human Rights Commission 50th Anniversary celebration on Tuesday, December 10, 2013, 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall. This ceremony is a powerful way to acknowledge the work of outstanding people who inspire us all. Past Human Rights Award recipients have included Magdaleno Rose-Avila, Joe Martin, Legal Voice, Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, Casa Latina, Pride Foundation, Somali Community Services of Seattle, YWCA Girls First, Trans Jail Policy Group, the Wing Luke Asian Museum and many others.

Therese Caouette to speak at Seattle Human Rights Day on December 10

Therese Caouette will speak at an evening event to celebrate the 14th annual Seattle Human Rights Day, which also honors the Seattle Human Rights Commission’s 50th Anniversary on Tuesday, December 10, 7:30-8:40 pm at Town Hall Seattle on 8th Avenue and Seneca.

Therese Caouette has worked with refugees, migrants and displaced persons in Southeast Asia for more than 30 years. Her work focuses on enhancing leadership and skills in local communities and supporting structural change. She has worked with some of the most isolated and marginalized populations in the Mekong Region of Southeast Asia. Therese has a Master’s degree in Public Health from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok and is currently on faculty with the University of Washington, Seattle University and Thammasat University in Thailand. She is the Executive Director of Partners Asia, which provides small community grants to marginalized communities in Myanmar and neighboring countries.

The evening will include presentation of the 2013 Human Rights Awards, which recognize a Seattle area individual, organization, youth and business who have advanced human rights. The event also will feature recognition of the City of Seattle Human Rights Commission, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The annual Seattle Human Rights Day event commemorates the sixty-fifth anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted December 10, 1948.
