WA State Student Advisory Group Kick Off

Seattle, WA – High school student leaders from around Washington State will gather July 15 from 6-8 pm at El Centro de la Raza to develop a platform and to organize an advisory group to inform education policy. The new student advisory group will focus on reducing inequalities and barriers to education experienced by an increasing share of the student population.

“It is so important for students’ voices to be heard by people who are making decisions that will affect us for the rest of our lives,” said Ahlaam Ibraahim, student body president of Rainier Beach High School. “We need to have a voice in those decisions.”

The new advisory group invites the media and community members to attend to learn about traditionally disenfranchised students’ identification of key issues important to their educational success. These include inequitable school funding and lack of sufficient support services for poor, immigrant, homeless, special education and foster students who comprise more than half of Washington State’s student population.

Superintendent of Public Instruction candidate Robin Fleming’s campaign is sponsoring this event. “For more than 20 years, I’ve worked to reduce barriers to education for students,” Fleming said. “Supporting development of a formal channel through which student voices can inform policy will result in more effective outcomes for our students and our state.”
